Where the South Downs meet the sea near Eastbourne is the classic Beachy Head cliff top walk.The Belle Tout Lighthouse was first lit in 1834 by thirty oil lamps in an attempt to stem the number of shipwrecks on this stretch of coast.

The original Belle Tout lighthouse was built in 1832 and came into operation on the 11th October 1834. Whilst Belle Tout was a very successful lighthouse, it suffered from a number of problems. Sea fog would often obscure the light and over the years, erosion of the cliff reduced the effectiveness in relation to the proximity to the cliff edge.

Belle Tout. Belle Tout has a unique history, first built back in 1832 and perched high on a Beachy Head cliff top where it's lantern could be seen twenty miles out to sea. Thanks to cliff erosion slightly diminishing its effectiveness, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1902, until it was privately bought in the 1920's.
